New Progress Housing Association is urging its customers to be prepared for the winter weather and stay warm by following some simple tips.

Last year in December and January the housing groups Property Services Division received 1,624 phone calls from customers about heating, hot water or flooding problems.

Despite the difficult conditions and high demand, all services continued to operate with many of the problems being dealt with within 24 hours. Care was also available for vulnerable tenants who required assistance in the period between Christmas and New Year.

To help people prepare for the winter weather the group engineers are advising customers to:

If cold weather is forecast, and during a cold snap, keep your heating on overnight at a low temperature so pipes won’t freeze.

Make sure you know where your stop cock is in case pipes burst so you can turn the water off at the source.

Protect pipes in your loft or basement by wrapping them with insulation to prevent them from freezing.

Making your home energy efficient will make it cheaper and quicker to heat your home during the cold weather. Customer can contact the group energy efficiency advisor on 01772 450600 for advice on how to reduce winter fuel bills.

New Progress Housing Association has also launched its ‘Winter Warmer’ campaign with staff visiting over 300 residents providing tips on staying warm during the winter months, as well as handing out room thermometers and energy saving advice.
