Installing CCTV in your home

As a tenant or leaseholder, you are legally permitted to install CCTV cameras to protect your property.

CCTV, such as doorbells with a camera, can be a good way to provide greater security to your property and act as a deterrent to would-be criminals.

However, you must ensure that they operate any system responsibly and that you are aware of their responsibilities with regard to respecting the privacy of their neighbours or any passers-by whose images may be captured on their system.

If you install a domestic CCTV system which captures images of people outside of their boundary (including gardens), you become a data controller, and therefore, you must comply with your legal obligations under the data protection laws (The UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018).

CCTV can have many benefits for domestic security, but you must install it in accordance with the law. Some helpful information can be found here. (external website)

NICE2SHARE

If you have CCTV cameras at home, you can register with NICE2SHARE, which is Lancashire Constabulary’s Community Portal. By doing so, you will help deter and solve crimes more quickly.

By registering your cameras with the Community Portal, you will streamline the information exchange, making it easier for the Constabulary to identify which of your cameras may have evidential footage and simplify the process of making it available to the Investigating Officer.

The service is free of charge and entirely voluntary. By registering with the portal, you are not giving the Constabulary access to your CCTV system; you are making it easier to request and collect footage that might be required in an investigation – the only footage the Constabulary will ever have access to is the footage you send.

You can register for the NICE2SHARE scheme here (external website).
