Progress Housing Group, South Ribble Refuge and Chorley’s Women’s Refuge are supporting ‘16 Days of Action’ an international campaign to raise awareness of abuse against women.

Over the 16 Days of Action which begins on Wednesday 25 November, International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on Thursday 10 December, International Human Rights Day. Progress Housing Group (@ProgressHG) will tweet a domestic abuse statistic every day to raise awareness of domestic abuse, how people can support the campaign and where they can get free and confidential advice 24 hours a day.

Members of staff from both South Ribble and Chorley Women’s Refuge, which are owned and managed by Progress Housing Group, will be stood outside Leyland’s Market Hall on Tuesday 8 December encouraging locals to show their support by drawing around their hand and signing it to pledge ‘my hand is not for hitting’ highlighting the campaign to end domestic abuse towards women.

Progress Housing Group will also be holding a live Facebook Q&A session on Wednesday 2 December from 7pm-8pm, where Liz Stanton, Manager of both South Ribble and Chorley Women’s Refuge will be available to answer anyone questions on the help and support available to those experiencing domestic abuse.

Liz Stanton, Manager of South Ribble and Chorley Women’s Refuges, said: “In our local area there are hundreds of women living with domestic abuse who do not recognise it, or do not know where to turn.

By taking part in this campaign every year we hope to let people know that help is out there for those suffering domestic abuse, that it can happen to women of any age and that we can offer support and a safe haven for those wishing to flee an abusive situation.”

South Ribble Women’s Refuge opened its doors in 2000 and has provided a safe haven to over 750 women and their children. The Refuge staff have supported a further 500 women through its community resettlement service.
