Preston Vocational Centre is running a number of different DIY courses to support individuals in gaining skills in a number of trade areas.

Each trade area will have four evening sessions covering the basic skills required to help you complete small jobs and maintain your property.

The courses on offer are Plastering, Bricklaying, Painting & Decorating and Joinery & Carpentry.

Each session costs £25 but the Group can help with any costs if you are a tenant or live in one of our properties.

Course descriptions

Plastering taster session – tools, techniques, basic use and application of plaster

You will be given a basic understanding of the tools required to carry out most basic tasks in the plasterer’s role, the use of the tools in different tasks and with different materials and how to get the best out of them.

You will use a number of different plasters to enable you to undertake most general plaster work, understanding backgrounds and the setting process according to the background and plaster.

Brickwork taster session – tools, techniques and basic brickwork skills

You will be given a basic understanding of the tools required to carry out most basic tasks in the Bricklayer’s role, the use of the tools in different tasks and with different materials and how to get the best out of them.

You will complete the basic brickwork tasks to enable you to work to level and plumb.

Joinery / carpentry taster session – tools, techniques, cutting and chiselling exercises

You will be given a basic understanding of the tools required to carry out most basic tasks in the Joiner/ Carpenters role, the use of the tools in different tasks and with different materials and how to get the best out of them. Understanding different hinges and the fitting process, locks and latches and replacing damaged door furniture, fixings and their differences.

Painting taster session – tools, techniques, cutting in exercises

Understanding the techniques to enable you to complete simple painting tasks in your property, the uses of correct tools and the preparation of background surfaces to accept the paints.
