An Apprentice at Progress Lifeline

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2018, we catch up with Progress Lifeline Administration Apprentice Lauren Way.


“I heard about the Progress Housing Group apprenticeship through my Grandma just as my two years at Runshaw College studying Art and Design was coming to an end.  I decided to apply as I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to gain valuable experience for the future.

My job title is Administration Apprentice and the qualification that I will be coming out with is a Level 2 NVQ in Administration.

When I was at school I used to contemplate whether to go down the apprenticeship path. I always knew that apprenticeships were amazing opportunities and valuable work experience but I wasn’t sure which industry would suit me, so I ended up at college first which has been useful as I can now compare the two routes and also have more qualifications!

I started my apprenticeship with Progress Lifeline on the 8th January 2018 and ever since I started I have enjoyed it. My team are a fantastic team to work with and I can’t thank them enough for training me. 

When I first started training I found it challenging as there was so much to learn and to take in, but the main things I have learned are how to book appointments with customers for Progress Lifeline Telecare equipment to be installed, how to manage and deal with referrals, including data-inputting the referrals into our database, how to work in a team and manage multiple administration tasks.

When it comes to the end of the apprenticeship I aspire to go higher up the career path in administration, perhaps becoming a PA; or mixing my previous art and design experience and my administration skills to one day start a new career in interior design.

My advice to other young people who are leaving school or college this year is to think wisely about what they want to do or aspire to be. When I was at school a lot of my friends were going to college and I kind of followed the herd a little but if I think back now I definitely would have gone straight into an apprenticeship for sure. At the end of the day, at college you’re there to learn, socialise and come out with a qualification. In an apprenticeship you learn as well as earn and gain that qualification with quality experience.

Working for Progress Lifeline has definitely made me keen to continue to work in an area which involves helping the elderly, older or more vulnerable people, and supporting families. At Progress Lifeline, we are here to help families and reassure them by helping their loved ones stay independent and enjoy their independence by continuing to live in their own homes for longer.

If it wasn’t for my Grandma telling me about this apprenticeship and reassuring me that I could do this I wouldn’t be here today enjoying my career.”
