Progress Housing Group and property maintenance professionals, Bell Group, recently collaborated to improve the living accommodation for a supported living tenant in Lancashire as part of their shared commitment to social value.

Bell Group were approached to help decorate the flat of Blackburn-based talented local artist and Progress Housing Group supported living tenant, Robert.

Last summer, Robert had showcased his work at an art exhibition as part of Learning Disability Week. The removal of Robert’s artwork from his walls at home, in preparation for the exhibition, had left his walls requiring redecorating. Subsequently Robert was left feeling unhappy in his accommodation and this was having a detrimental effect on his wellbeing.

Brian King, Contracts Surveyor at Progress Housing Group, who linked Robert up with Bell Group to commission the work in Robert’s flat, said “Our supported living housing enables people to remain independent in their own home but sometimes, like everyone, a little bit of help is appreciated and it was great that we could assist Robert to decorate his flat with the help of our contractor.

“Progress Housing Group has worked with Bell for six years and so we approached them to help because this was a worthy project that fitted their social responsibility policy criteria.

“We are so pleased that Bell helped Robert and that he is so happy in his newly painted flat.”

Community Engagement Co-ordinatorat Bell Group, Karen Fletcher said, “At Bell Group we want every project we work on to leave a positive impact in the community. The opportunity to support Robert and improve his surroundings was one we were delighted to take.

“We hope he can now feel happy and proud of his home.”

Supported Living tenant Robert added, “I loved showcasing my art for Learning Disability Week last year but it had been displayed around the walls of my flat with different glues and nails for years. When it was taken down for the exhibition, my walls were left in such a mess; it made me feel down whenever anyone came into my flat. I felt very unhappy and I did not like bringing anyone round.

“Progress Housing Group told me that there might be an opportunity to get my flat redecorated by Bell and they came to my flat and looked at what needed to be done. It was a big job preparing the walls and woodwork.

“I had a great laugh with the decorators! They were really good and they made me feel at home. They painted my flat with the colour choices I had chosen and always kept my flat as tidy as possible while they were doing the work.

“It took a few days but the work is now completed and I am really happy with the way it looks. I feel so happy and proud of my flat and I’m keeping it neat and tidy and putting my art in frames properly. I am not ashamed anymore when people visit - I actually want people to visit now!

“I want to thank Bell and Progress Housing Group for helping me. The laughs and jokes that we had were really good and I now have a lovely flat to live in again.”

Bell Group were able to help Robert free of charge as part of their commitment to social value, and social responsibility, which makes a positive impact on individuals in the communities they serve.
