Building Futures at Progress Housing Group - Liam's story
Progress Housing Group Plumbing and Heating Apprentice, Liam, shares his apprenticeship journey for National Apprenticeship Week 2021.
The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2021 is 'Building Futures'. We spoke to Liam about his experience of undertaking an apprenticeship at Progress Housing Group.
My name is Liam and I am training to become a Plumbing and Heating Engineer at Progress Housing Group.
I feel really proud to work at Progress because I feel like I'm getting some the best training that's out there and I’m definitely proud to be part of a team that does so much for the community.
The benefits of doing an apprenticeship at Progress are that I get to learn from professionals with a lot of experience and knowledge. Through what I have experienced and achieved so far I've found that I am also getting the best support. My colleagues have also been welcoming and easy to get a long with!
How my apprenticeship journey started at Progress Housing Group
I managed to find my apprenticeship with Progress by searching on a job site. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the first interview was conducted over Zoom and I got through this first round! With the good news, I had a second interview, which was face to face this time.
Overall, the whole application process was a good and safe experience during the current situation with the pandemic.
You're not on your own when you choose do do an apprenticeship, especially at Progress
My managers and my team who are training and mentoring me at Progress have helped me by being welcoming and supportive, making sure I have everything I need and they talk me through things if there is anything I don’t understand.
When my apprenticeship is complete, given the opportunity, I would love to continue working for Progress and expand my knowledge into other areas, for example in gas and then hopefully (maybe one day!) start my own business with the skills I have learnt here at Progress.
So far during my apprenticeship at Progress, I have achieved knowledge and understanding of working in the trade; I know now how day-to-day things run and how to work more efficiently.
I’m looking forward to learning how to install full bathrooms and Kitchens also learning parts of other trades associated with plumbing and heating.
