Joan Musker, chairperson of Wade Hall Community Association, says: “We have been working with people in the community and we knew this was needed, so with the support of volunteers, we set the shop up.

“It has been very well received so far and it gets busy. We are open until 6.30pm so is accessible for people who are working.”

Wade Hall Community Association also runs two social and activity groups on Wednesdays and Fridays, which provide warm spaces for people.

The Back to Basics group is open from 12.30pm until 3.30pm on Wednesdays, offering support and opportunities to learn a new skill, such as crochet, arts and crafts, as well as cooking on a budget. There will also be job and training opportunities and budget advice.

On Fridays, the Thrift Shop will be open, from 12.30pm until 6.30pm. There will be clothes stalls, plus opportunities to have a chat or play table tennis or cards. From 7 October, free warm soup will be served.

Joan adds: “Because of the rising cost of living, it is really important to have groups like this. We expect our cooking on a budget sessions to be really useful so hopefully we can share ideas on batch cooking and how to make the most out of low cost ingredients. People will realise that they are not alone in this and we can give them the support they need.

“We are also offering these sessions as warm spaces to support the community this winter.”

*The Place Community Centre is owned by Progress Housing Group, with independent groups and organisations, like Wade Hall Community Association, running their own activities.
