Progress Housing Group Board welcomes new trainee NED, Hamza

Earlier this year, we welcomed three more Trainee NEDs, Zarina Chowdrey, Jen McGuiness and Hamza Ahmed. Zarina and Jen joined us in January 2022, with Hamza joining us most recently in April.

Spotlight on Hamza

We recently caught up with our newest trainee NED, Hamza

Hamza has worked for a multi-national software company for eight years, rising through the ranks to become Service Delivery Manager. In his role, Hamza manages the delivery of software solutions to all corners of the world, with his team responsible for delivering millions of pounds of software annually.

Born and raised in Preston, Hamza grew up on a council estate, moving to a property rented from a housing association. Only this year, Hamza purchased a shared ownership property with Progress Housing Group and, upon seeing our new adverts for our trainee NED programme, knew it was a role he could be perfect for due to his experience of living in social housing.

Hamza joins the second cohort of our award-winning two-year part-time board trainee programme. Working with the Group and Housing Diversity Network, the programme involves a mixture of training, mentoring, coaching, and observations to help our trainee NEDs develop the skills needed to contribute to board discussions, improve housing services and contribute to making a difference to people's lives.

About his new role with the Group, Hamza said, "I saw an email from Progress Housing Group about seeking trainee NEDs and immediately thought I would be a perfect fit for the role.

"I am hoping my experiences of living in social housing but, at the same time, 'housing' being completely alien for me, allow me to bring a different perspective to the board.

"I also think it's a great opportunity for me to learn a variety of new skills, build confidence and gain an understanding of how a large business operates, all that with the benefit of mentoring and coaching!"

Our Trainee Board Member Programme was developed in partnership with Housing Diversity Network to provide an opportunity for enthusiastic, creative and committed people who live in our communities to gain Non-Executive Director Board experience and develop their careers.
