Bringing communities together - Leyland and Farington Scarecrow Trail
“There was a lovely buzz in town” as we held our first Leyland and Farington Scarecrow Trail over the bank holiday weekend.
We had 27 scarecrow entries from community groups, churches, and local residents.
The creative designs included Mario Kart, Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, Freda Kahlo, and Noah’s Ark.
Our Involvement Team organised the scarecrow trail with support from Leyland in Bloom and Dollies Dezigns.
Over the bank holiday weekend, more than 240 people followed the trail and cast their votes for their favourite scarecrow.
There were so many fantastic scarecrows as people found it hard to choose their favourites.
But the votes revealed…
1st - Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf by Wade Hall Community Association.
2nd - Dorothy and Friends by The Base Community Centre
Noah’s Ark by St Mary’s Catholic Church.
3rd - Lady Cappa de Chino and Lord Latte Barrista de Bucket by members of the Coffee Cafe at St Mary’s Community Centre
“He’s got the whole world in his hands” by Leyland United Reformed Church (URC).
There was also an extra prize for The Best of the Rest, which was awarded to SpongeBob SquarePants at Northgate.
We were thrilled with how popular the trail was and how it brought the Leyland and Farington community together.
Barbara Bidwell, Chairman of Leyland in Bloom, said: “Well done to everyone who took part. The turn-out was great, with lots of families going round together. There was a lovely buzz in town.”
Karen Livesey, Director of No Whispers CIC, who sponsored the first prize, said: "Congratulations to the winner of the scarecrow trail - what a wonderful display of the three little pigs and wolf.
"Well done to everyone who entered. These wonderful creations added a colourful dimension across Leyland and brought laughter and smiles to many people in the community.
"We were delighted to support the Scarecrow Trail and celebrate the creativity, community connection and enjoyment of this activity."
Other feedback included:
“It was hard to choose between them as they were all amazing. I even managed an eight-mile run around the trail.”
“I enjoyed going around, finding and seeing the scarecrows as a family. Well done to everyone who made the scarecrows.”
“We are already looking forward to taking part again next year, as we enjoyed both making and following the trail to look at everyone else’s scarecrows.”
“Thanks for a lovely event.”
“Well done to all those that have entered a great deal of time and effort.”
“Thanks to all for organising this. It has been great fun, and we are already talking ideas for next year!”
- We will automatically enter all the scarecrows in our Progress Housing Group scarecrow competition. Watch out for details of the winners later this month.
- We will also announce the winners of the children’s colouring competition on Facebook live at Dollies Dezigns at 4pm on Friday 8 September.
