My career in Progress | Alexandra, Assistant Treasury and Capital Accountant
Assistant Treasury and Capital Accountant, Alexandra, has worked at Progress Housing Group for nine months.
We hear from Alexandra (Ali) about what it's like working in the Finance Team at the Group, and the learning journey she's on to achieve her ACCA qualification with our support.
Hi Ali, you've been with the Group for just over nine months now working in the Finance Team, what started your career journey here with us?
One of my biggest wishes was to work for a company that makes a real difference. So, working for Progress Housing Group - a not-for-profit housing provider - means a lot to me.
Working for a Group that provides affordable homes, ensuring people remain safe and empowering them to thrive confidently, makes me feel like I have fulfilled one of my dreams.
Can you tell us about the career progression and learning and development you've received at the Group?
I have started off in Treasury and Capital, two departments that I did not have much experience in. This has been a learning experience for me and my manager's support has been vital towards me being successful in this role.
I have also started studying ACCA since joining the Group, which I am hoping to complete within the next 24 months.
What is it like working in finance at the Group?
It is fast-paced and it can be challenging at times, however I have always received support when I've needed it. My colleagues are always eager to help and together we have always overcome any challenges we've encountered.
What does an average week look like for you and your team?
The predominant task in Treasury is making sure that there is always sufficient funds in the bank to meet ongoing operational and capital investment requirements. Other tasks include overseeing the forecast cash-flow positions and related borrowing needs and ensuring we are charged interest at the correct rate.
Our main priority has always been to manage our cash efficiently.
What are you looking forward to getting involved in as part of your future career?
I look forward to learning more about treasury and capital. I look at my manager and I see her as my role model; I want to know everything she knows inside and out! In addition, I look forward to completing my ACCA studies which will provide me with invaluable knowledge and boost my confidence.
What would you recommend about working for the Group?
Progress Housing Group has high core values; it really supports its employees whilst challenging them to grow within the company. The managers are very supportive; there is always somebody who is willing to help or have a chat over a brew. So, I think the best thing about working at Progress is the people.
What would you like to tell any new starters about what it's like to work here?
Progress has a culture of care so employees are truly valued within the company. Expect a lot of fun during the summer socials where you will get to meet and have fun with everybody. It’s a place where you will feel like every day is a new day - there is always something new to learn, and something to challenge and motivate you.
What makes you most proud about working for Progress?
I am proud to work for a company that truly cares for its employees and customers. Progress truly makes a difference and I am happy and honoured to be part of it.
Famously Proud to be Progress
Our teams come from a variety of backgrounds bringing a wealth of knowledge, skills and experiences to the Group, and we've got one thing in common - we are immensely proud and passionate about changing lives.
Every day, our team of almost 900 colleagues rise to the challenge of delivering high-quality homes and related services that make a real difference in our communities and the people who live in them.
As one team, we work together and empower and support each other to ensure we do everything we can to make a positive difference.
