Benefits of green living at our Lancaster Extra Care scheme
Green living is about making a conscious choice to live in a way that’s kind to the environment, whether for example that is reducing waste or saving energy.
That is our focus at our new 92-apartment Extra Care scheme at St Martin’s Court in Lancaster. Sustainability and energy efficiency are at the heart of our vision for these affordable homes, which will be available to rent for those aged 55 and over.
From the early planning stages, we have made sure the design of the scheme is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective for people who live there.
When it's completed St Martin’s Court will feature Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems, high levels of ventilation and insulation, alongside low-carbon technologies such as air-source heat pumps and roof-mounted solar panels.
Andrew Sutherland, Head of Development at Progress Housing Group, explains why the development is all about green living, meeting high standards on energy efficiency and sustainability.
“By prioritising the energy efficiency of a home from the outset, we focus on reducing heat loss to create sustainable, affordable housing. St Martin’s Court is designed to minimise energy consumption and carbon emissions. It will provide long-term cost savings for our tenants through lower energy bills.”
Sustainability features
- Air source heat pumps
Air source heat pumps capture warmth from the outside air and use it to heat your home. This can significantly reduce your energy use and lower your heating bills. With a smaller carbon footprint than traditional heating systems, these pumps also help create a healthier environment for everyone. - Solar PV panels
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels turn sunlight into electricity, providing you with a renewable and sustainable source of energy. By producing your own power, you can cut down on energy costs. Plus, since they reduce reliance on fossil fuels, solar panels help improve air quality, contributing to better respiratory health - Increased wall insulation
Enhanced wall insulation ensures your home stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer, making it more comfortable and reducing heating and cooling costs. It also prevents moisture build-up and mould growth, creating a healthier indoor environment for you. - Mechanical ventilation
Mechanical ventilation systems provide a steady flow of fresh air while removing stale air, helping to maintain good indoor air quality. This reduces your risk of exposure to airborne illnesses and allergens. These systems are also energy-efficient, as they can recover heat from the outgoing air, further lowering your heating costs.
