My career in Progress - Gill, Head of Governance

What's it like to work at Progress Housing Group?

Our people say we're a fantastic place to work. That, here at Progress Housing Group, we are 'friendly', that we 'value' our colleagues, and that they feel that they are empowered to 'make a difference'.

If this sounds like the kind of place you want to work, a career in Progress Housing Group is one you won't regret.

We recently spoke to our Head of Governance, Gill, about her career journey with the Group.

Hi Gill, how did your career at Progress Housing Group begin?

I previously worked for the Group for eight years and left to join a different sector. I came back six months ago.

What brought you to the Group initially, and what brought you back?!

I initially started with the Group as a Governance Assistant – I wanted a new career, and there was an opportunity. I came back for so many reasons! I missed the people, and I love the positive culture here.  Progress is really good at developing leaders, and I missed the opportunities I had to develop these skills and mentor and coach others.

What made you want to work in Governance as a career?

I trained as a personal/executive assistant, and it was a great way to use those skills and develop a professional career.

Can you tell us about the career progression and professional development you've received at the Group?

I started as a Governance Assistant and have progressed to officer, manager and head of service during my time here. Some of that was through formal training, but mainly, it was gaining experience and skills by working collaboratively with colleagues on various projects.

What is it like leading the Governance service here at Progress?

This is no ordinary governance service! We focus on the outcomes we want to achieve and use Governance positively to get us there. We're a very collaborative team and genuinely believe in the Group's values. I like to support individuals in feeling empowered in their roles. I'll train, mentor and coach, but I want to let individuals spread their wings and fly.

What does an average week look like for you and your team?

Plan to perfection and then go with the flow is a standard motto in our team! We prioritise board and committee activity, such as supporting colleagues to write reports, sharing information and minuting meetings. We're also focused on regulatory compliance, including ensuring policies are reviewed promptly.  We've got loads of exciting projects on the go, and team members get involved depending on their skill sets and passions.

What are the challenges and opportunities in Governance in social housing currently?

The Regulator of Social Housing has recently changed how it regulates the Consumer Standards. This has created a lot of activity in the sector, and we're currently recruiting new tenant committee members. There's a lot of evidence to gather, but the most important thing is our tenants and their homes and communities.

What are you looking forward to getting involved in as part of your future career?

I love service improvement – if there's a better way of doing it, then let's make those changes together.

What would you recommend about working for the Group?

For me, it's the people. While I mostly work from home, it's great being in the office or working with colleagues.  I also love getting the day off for my birthday!

What can someone expect from coming to work for the Group?

A thorough induction, training, support, clear instructions and the opportunity to collaborate and provide feedback that is listened to and acted upon.

What makes you most proud about working for Progress?

We make a difference in people's lives.

Famously Proud to be Progress

Our teams come from a variety of backgrounds bringing a wealth of knowledge, skills and experiences to the Group, and we've got one thing in common - we are immensely proud and passionate about changing lives.

Every day our team of almost 900 colleagues rise to the challenge of delivering high-quality homes and related services that make a real difference in our communities and to the people who live in them.

As one team, we work together and empower and support each other, to ensure we do everything we can to make a positive difference.

Thanks to Gill for sharing her career journey with us so far.
